FTBLL – Can you kick it

ISH Dance Collective celebrates football in its new production, FTBLL – Can you kick it. Accompanied by massive hip hop beats, choreographer Marco Gerris brings street skills into the theatre with this exciting new show. The internationally renowned cast of freestyle football players, street football players and breakers explodes off the stage with their dazzling footwork, impressive power moves and hypnotic dance sequences. They never miss a beat!

ODE TO FOOTBALL
It’s not surprising that Marco Gerris is the one to come up with this unique combination of styles. He has been an avid football fan for as long as he can remember, and his performing arts career started off in the Amsterdam Vondelpark where he practised day after day as an inline skater. His love for urban sports has remained the base for all of the shows he created with ISH Dance Collective for the last 20 years.

Once Gerris learned about freestyle football and street football, it immediately triggered his imagination. “I saw players who weren’t participating in games practising all kinds of tricks on the sidelines. It struck me that many of their moves are quite comparable to dance sequences in a way.” Marco then put some football players together with some breakers and the idea for choreographing a full scale work had been born.

It’s not just the physical moves that show parallels with dance, it’s also the positive competitiveness. A breaking battle and a street soccer game show many similarities, Marco felt. “You battle with each other, you try to use your best moves. You want to beat the other.” FTBLL – Can you kick it captures the essence and the passion of the footballers and breakers alike and brings them together in a spectacular choreography.
