AYAHUASCA IS A PERFORMANCE THAT CONNECTS EXPERIMENTAL HIP-HOP AND MENTAL SELF-REFLECTION IN AN INNOVATIVE WAY.
Choreographer Gil Gomes Leal is inspired by the mental complexity of human beings. With alienating and occasionally disruptive movements, the dancers expose the depths of their souls following a ceremony, which involves drinking the age-old drink called Ayahuasca. An investigation into a more balanced and grounded state of consciousness.
Gil went on a research trip to Peru in November 2018 to understand the Ayahuasca plant better. He had the opportunity to learn and heal during the ceremonies in collaboration with a Shaman from Peru. A life-changing experience that led to the performance AYAHUASCA. The performance is by a troupe of six dancers, all with their own language of movement. An Ayahuasquero who leads the ceremony will also accompany the dancers.
Gil Gomes Leal has developed in recent years from an exceptional dancer to a new maker with a strong artistic signature that is accompanied by his own vision of preliminary research and self-reflection. In his work, he focuses on mental self-reflection, investigating spirituality and how this translates to the body.
